February Blog Chain: Antagonists

‘Tis time for another blog chain. This month’s theme is Antagonists. There is going to be two parts, so please read carefully.

Part one: Describe the antagonist in your novel in 50 words or less.

Part two: What would you say to your antagonist if you met him or her in real life? Post a scene in response to this question in 100 words or less.

I mentioned Julian in the past. He is the main antagonist in my second book, SuD.

Part One:

Julian Payton is a Nephilim, a race born in a time when fallen angels mated with the daughters of men. He is perfection in looks, dress and manner. But within him boils the curse of the Fallen, Wrath. He keeps under a tight control until the Hunger beckons….

Part Two:

Mr. Payton, CEO of the Cerberus Investment Group glanced at his watch, “Gentlemen, we have been at this for hours. I suggest we take a break for lunch and meet back here at 2:30.”

The others nodded in near unison. I stayed behind, downing two more aspirins in an attempt to keep a creeping headache at bay. I saw through the board room glass wall Mr. Payton meeting with a gorgeous brunette. For a split second his handsome features turned…predatory. She was dead. I knew it and by the way he smiled, so did he.

  1. First off, I LOVE the Star Wars pic. Awesome.

I like how you observed Julian, but didn’t say anything. The aspirins give me the inkling that if I was around Mr. Payton, I probably would need more then just two…

  2. Still debating joining a blog chain, I can be forgetful. But had to say I love your “Take your child to work day” pic !!!

  3. Oooh, interesting. Does Julian live off humans?

    • In their own way the Nephilim are parasitic, as they live off the whole of humanity, but the Hunger is more metaphysical than literal. Although that is no comfort for it’s victims.

  5. I remember Julian from an earlier blog chain – which made me enjoy this piece even more. He is a very interesting character. I want to know more about him!

    • Thank you. And it is nice to have my commentators/readers back. It’s been quite around here for awhile, but then again, I haven’t posted as much as I did. I aim to fix that.

  8. Hm! The description makes it seem like a high fantasy but the writing is definitely more modern and grounded. Is this a “Devil’s Advocate” style situation?

    • It’s Urban Fantasy:

A broad genre label, this includes just about any setting which involves present-day Earth with a magical element. There is usually a Masquerade of some kind, but the most daring of these sorts of settings and stories, like GURPS Technomancer, actually integrate magic into normal society. If this isn’t the case, though, there’s guaranteed to be another society (or five) just for the supernatural beings.

In other words a blend of the two.

  10. That’s pretty friggin’ creepy having a third party observer tell us, just from a look, how it’s going to play out.

  11. I’m a sucker for a classy devil. They’re the best of the worst.

Your writing is very easy on the eyes, as well. Nice take on the blog chain theme.

And, of course: LOVE the Stones and the Star Wars reference ๐Ÿ˜‰
