Space for Rent: Rafa’s Escort Service

Last week massacre in California made me think of my college days. Back then I managed to, in spite of my extreme social awkwardness and ineptitude, to have a large circle of friends and acquaintances.  Many of them were women. We would gather in the Student Union building for breakfast or lunch, tell stories, talk about the days events, etc. Often one of these women would ask me to accompany them to a location on campus. It happened so often I joked about setting up an escort service for ladies. Seemed pretty funny at the time.

Over twenty years later…not so much.

Time and time again women asks a male friend to escort them to and from their destinations.

In broad daylight.

In a campus filled with thousands of students.

A campus shock full of campus police as well as regular police.

A campus that at times seemed to gleam under the bright tropical sun.

I could not see it then, and I’m ashamed to admit that it took me this long to pierce through my own privilege to see what was really happening. After all, I walked all over the place, confident, even arrogantly. Hell, I strutted like a cock (my Alma Matters mascot is a rooster), checking out the ladies in their short shorts, drinking in the sunshine or simply sitting in a quite corner to read a book or two. Unless I was walking alone in parking lot after dark, I rarely feared for my safety. I feared more for my green two door Corolla been stolen that for someone to attack me in the dark, let alone in broad daylight.

This was not something one woman was worried about.

Multiple women asked me on multiple occasions to escort them around campus.

The reality of it is stunning and frightening.

In their world they could be harassed, assaulted or murdered everywhere, at any time, for any reasons and asking a male friend they trusted to escort them was not simply a coping mechanism, it was a survival strategy.

Let me repeat that, it was a a tactic within a larger set that formed a complex strategy for survival.

  1. It’s so sad, isn’t it? And it’s even sadder when it takes horrible news to make people SEE it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
