Absolute Write Novermber 2012 Blog Chain: National Mock Review Month

Tweet of the Day: What is Science Fiction for?

——-

Starting Date: Monday, November 5, 2012
Open to all forum members, even after it starts!

This month’s prompt:
NaMoReMo (National Mock Review Month)

In the spirit of NaNoWriMo, write a mock review of a writing project that you have done or would like to do. Make sure to either give a brief, one-sentence description of what the project is or work it into the review somehow. You can review anything (poetry, prose, collected blog posts) and in any way you like (funny, serious, Dadaist).

Instructions:
Simply post your blog’s URL in this thread to join. Each post should be less than 1000 words if possible. Read and comment on other participants’ posts if you possibly can–they’ll be doing the same for you!

This is a review of my first NaNoWriMo: Sturm und Drang, a Urban Fantasy novella.

Ostensibly it is the story of one Ethan Allen, Japanese-American, U.S. Army veteran and recipient of the Medal of Honor in a recent conflict in Korea. As American power diminishes around the world, Allen discovers his family secret, a demon hunting sword. I say ostensibly because Allen is the least interesting character in the story suffused with far more captivating personalities, from the the Japanese-Korean Kai loyalty to his Yakusa clan, to the erudite Templar who struggles to resolve the conflict between his sexual orientation and his Catholic faith.  But the most captivating characterization goes to Johan, the story erstwhile villain. A demon spawn with a fetish for killing women post-coitus, Johan never the less comes across as someone doomed to suffer from a condition he has no control over and is desperately trying to find a way to survive the inevitable showdown with Allen. It leads me to believe that this disjointed tale of near future American socioeconomic collapse would have flowed better if told through Johan’s perspective.

Overall a good first effort but the elements simply do not add up.

So there, a harsh but fairly accurate review (with a tinge of self-mockery) for you. Up next: bmadsen.

  3. I feel your heartache. I’m still working on my novel from last year and it’s gone through 2 full rewrites already…both times I switched the POV.

    • Yeah, I tried to save it, but it was too much of a mess. Some good ideas and interesting scenes that I may recycle later. Or maybe I’ll turn the villain(s) into protagonist. They seem to have better stories to tell.

  5. Sounds like there’s a great plot there, even if the execution isn’t what you want it to be.

    • That’s one of the hazards of NaNo (and writing by the seat of your pants in general). Great ideas may pop up, and usually do, but can get lost in incoherence. Still, no words is truly wasted if it gets you closer to being a better writer.

  7. Ah, when the minor characters take over the story. I know this feeling well!
