October 2011 AW Blog Chain: Gloaming

Tweet of the Day: Trend: Graphic Novel Adaptations

——-

Here we are, October 4 and time for my entry into the October 20011 AW Blog Chain.

The rules are as fallows:

This month’s prompt: Some Things Dark and Dangerous

Choose a word from this list of Lovecraftian words or this list of obscure words (or one from both if you’re feeling ambitious). Use your chosen word(s) to craft your post. It doesn’t have to be Lovecraftian or even horror, but it should be dark, or unsettling, or scary, or Halloweenish in general.

Simply post in this thread to join. Each post should be less than 1000 words if possible. Read and comment on other participants’ posts if you possibly can–they’ll be doing the same for you!

I’ll let you know in this thread when it’s your turn.
Once your turn comes up, you have two days to complete your post. When you are finished, please post a link to your post on the thread so I can let the next person in line know that their turn is up. If you signed up but find yourself unable to participate or need to be moved around in the schedule, please PM me or post in the thread. If you fail to post on your blog and on the thread within two days, I’ll bump you down to the end of the line on the third day; you’ll get a second chance at the end of the month.

So that in mind I chose the word: Gloaming.

Enjoy!

Tween the Gloaming and the Midnight Dreary….

A weird song title, but while it was a brand new song, it sounded like I have heard it forever. The clouds above me broke up like Morse code.  I picked a formation that looked like a S.O.S.  A green road sign flashed by, 5 miles to Placid. Just 2.5 miles from my exit. In a few minutes I would be back at the lakeside lodge.

My family owned the property since they crossed the Mississippi in the 1840s. More of a pond really. Generations of Smiths swam, relaxed and deer watched from the lake shore. A log cabin turned into a farm house and then into a full size lodge. I turned on the exit into a two lane road. No traffic at this hour. The trees lined the road in hazy silence. No much daylight left. Another right turn into a long gravel road. Cost me an arm and a leg to repave the thing between summer visits and Midwestern frosts.

Still had time. Alice was with the girls at their dance classes. They would not get home until nine at the earliest. And besides, I checked the lodge at least once a month. Had to watch for squatters.

Plenty of time.

The sun sunk below the horizon and swallowed the landscape in darkness. I parked beside the lodge and check that my flashlight worked. I didn’t want to wear out the car battery or get the car stuck in the woods. I got out and went around the back. A press of the key chain popped the trunk open.

Large shovel, check.

Bag of road salt, check.

Plastic bags, check.

Body, check.

She was still lovely or was until the inevitable happened.

Until I happened.

Once upon a time,

Tween the gloaming and the midnight dreary….

  3. I think you meant “generations of Smiths” in the third paragraph. Does make one wonder how many generations of Smiths, and their victims, are beneath the lakefront as well!

  8. Wow, really love the story here; almost like it’s just another typical day at the office for him. Really shows what a sociopath he is by thinking about his wife and kids while he’s getting ready to do away with a body. Creeeepy!

  13. Wow. When I started reading I almost thought this would be a typical “weekend at the haunted lodge” kind of thing. Maybe like The Shining. But then he got all Dexter :). I loved it. Like the others have said, he was very methodical. Nice job!

    • I have a thing for cold calculating bastards as bad guys. The make the best antagonist. They are smart, ruthless and you can’t help but cheer when you finally break them. 🙂

  16. Ooo.. I never thought of The Shining. I was thinking it was going to be like Silent Hill.

    He seems so normal…

Two lines grabbed me, “The clouds above me broke up like Morse code.” and “The sun sunk below the horizon and swallowed the landscape in darkness.” Great visuals!

  17. I like how he considers the woman’s fate “inevitable” once she met him. He’s so normal in some respects, chillingly mad in others…shudder.
