Tweet of the Day: Technology Will Save Our Future


She gave her pulse rifle the once over. It was one of those things a soldier did during “dead” time, the space between shooting and being shot at. Intermittent lights flashed though the bunker firing slits. It wasn’t the fireworks of her youth spent underfoot of laughing relatives that sang raucous Christmas carols while fireworks filled the sky. The flash and thunder belonged to the artillery. The batteries lashed at unseen enemies beyond the perimeter.


A little fiber optic tree danced a top the fold out table in the corner. Bright white lights blinked in sequence to the music from its tiny speaker:

We wish you a Merry Christmas,

We wish you a Merry Christmas,

And a Happy New Year!

“At leas someone is celebrating the holidays,” she said aloud to the tree.

The platoon sergeant popped his head through the bunker’s sole entrance,  “Look alive soldier, we move in five.”

She glance at the tree, “When the going gets tough the fifty-fifth gets going.” With those words she strapped her helmet on and vaulted outside, back into the storm.
