Tweet of the Day: “Pete & Pete’ Was All White People!”
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Timothy, King James Bible.
Greed, not money is the root of all evil.
Greed and fear are the root of all evil.
Can religion be used for evil? All signs point to yes. But to reduce religion, its history, its existence, the way it has shaped humanity to simply evil is illogical to say the least. To believe that if you somehow banish all religion the world will be a better place is magical thinking of the worst kind. Yet this is the kind of thinking that the New Atheist, those defenders of logic and reason, have adopted. Time and time again the reduce complex ideas, difficult situations, and long standing historical disputes to the “evils of religion.” But anyone willing to scratch the surface will discover that greed and fear underline most human conflict, even when colored by religion.
The Troubles in Northern Ireland? A power struggle between two ethic groups, once that identified itself as Catholic and Irish, the other Protestant and British. The reason for religious division? A power play by a English monarch who wanted a male heir since back then loyalty to country was tied to religious affiliation. Thus only true Englishmen were Protestants, while Catholics were secret agents of Madrid, Paris, and Rome.
Surprised by the rise of ISIS/ISIL (or whatever they are calling it these days)? You shouldn’t be, if you ever heard of the Khmer Rouge. In the power vacuum left by failed superpower maneuvering all manner of groups rush to fill the void. The most radical tend to have the highest initial success, whether they call for the return of the mythical Caliphate or want to erase every shred of the Industrial Age from your country in the name of the glorious Communist Revolution. The first uses a religion as cover, the second ideology.
Nothing is more dangerous that appealing to power beyond our reach (due to nonresistance) to justify the unjustifiable. But, again, in the absence of religion, ideology and philosophy remain and if they are as useful to Greed and Fear as religion.
Banish religion and Greed for power remains.
Banish holy scripture and Fear of the Other remains.
Until we have defeated Greed and conquered Fear then, perhaps evil will end.
