“Buyer beware”
That is probably what some in the %1 or .5% are thinking right now. For decades they poured money into politics, ginning up the most radical elements of American political life, anarcho-capitalist, end-times believers and greedy fuckers.
They thought they could entice and incite the scared, the low-information voter and the willfully ignorant.
And guess what, they succeeded but not in the way the expected. Well, it did work as they expected, at first. They got regulations rolled back, the tax base shifted and direct access to public funding through privatization. As long as they dangled embryos, gays, vaginas and welfare queens in front on the peasants they could do as they please. But when the chickens of socioeconomic exploitation came to roost, the powerful panicked. The house of cards was falling and they were at risk.
So, did they do the sensible thing and re-invest in society at large? Maybe shoulder a bit of the responsibility?
Oh hell no!
They doubled down, more politics of sexual distraction, more blaming the victims, more and more of the same. They poured money into more races, into more radical candidates, who promised not simply to push back government but to tear it down. Of course they thought it would never come to this.
It just did.
Caveat Emptor indeed.

Sad how correct you are with this one: “As long as they dangled embryos, gays, vaginas and welfare queens in front on the peasants they could do as they please”
