Space for Rent: Wait Just One Minute

Tweet of the Day: Cathedral Collapse Crushes Congregants

From the Texas Republican Party Platform (2012):

Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.

Wait, what?

Yes, this is part of the party platform on a state level party in the U.S. Sure, it is not at the national level and no serious politician would say such a thing….

(Watches the news and comments about rape….)

“Oh MY GOD!” said the agnostic blogger on his writing blog. No, this is just, no I don’t want to believe it (sees another news report, then another, then a convention).

Really? A brazen call to ignorance? Is this what the political process has come to? Not that the other side is doing a better job. Yes, a lot of stuff about hope but mix in with messianic messaging, a call to fear (we are sane they are crazy) and capped by a priest that has no business being a political podium in the first place.

But none of this is new, of course. I think the problem is we expect that, somehow, it will be different this time, that yes, things are changing for the better.  Then you scratch the surface and it is the same bloody, sophomoric mess.

: conceited and overconfident of knowledge but poorly informed and immature <a sophomoric argument>
I think that is what defines this silly season, at least on one side, while at the same time using politics of distraction which the other side gleefully embraces because neither side wants you to focus on the bad things they both agree on like irresponsible spending, torture, aggressive war, a two-tier legals system (one for the rich the other for everyone else) and an obsession with secrecy.
So instead we get a few “Ah chucks,” mixed with a lot of “God Bless” this and “God Bless” that and carefully crafted historical myopias dolled up as great shows in dueling Coliseums.
Thunderous speeches mean nothing when the lighting already struck you in the head.
And the third party options?
That old man from Texas and his son from Kentucky (?) sound good but what is this about not supporting civil rights, or the gold standard.
Again, really?
The silly season is upon us, and I’m tired of silly games.

And now for some music to clear my mind:
