REPENT! THE END IS NIGH!
I wished somebody shut that guy up. Just because he was the Mayor’s cousin or something didn’t mean he had to spew his stupid shit all day.
THE HOUR OF TRIBULATION IS AT HAND! THE GATES OF HELL ARE OPEN AND THE RESTLESS DEAD WALK AMONG US!
Every single day the same thing. He parked his pick up truck in the middle of main street and yell his religious nonsense through the speaker system he installed in the damned thing. We didn’t need him. What we needed was more ammo not his scaremongering . Damned idiot only knew one book of the bible any way. Revelation this and revelation that. I gripped the handle of my nine tighter but I wasn’t about to waste a bullet on him.
“Thomas?” asked the lady vet. She was kinda of hot, with her brown hair done in a bun and cherry red lips. But I wasn’t here to get a date.
“How is he?” I asked
She sighed, “We did what we could but….”
“Thanks doc. Can I see him?”
“You should make it quick, just in case. You don’t mind if I lock door behind you, do you?” she said with half smile.
“Of course not. Besides I gotta go back to the barricade. Don’t expect much action today but you never know.”
“Sure.”
Jerry laid on the table. He raised his head a bit when he heard me come in. No whining, just some shallow panting. He been good dog, but a tad too curious. My great grandfather brought the first shepherd from Germany in 1945. Found the puppies under some rubble in West Berlin after the war. We bred them ever since. Jerry was the last.
“I’m sorry boy, I should have checked the fence,” I said. Not even a whimper. Jerry was too tough for that. I stroked his head once, checked my ear plus and put the barrel of my gun to his ear. He looked away as I pulled the trigger.
THE HOUR OF JUDGMENT IS UPON US!
And I’ve been found wanting. The doc would clean up. Hopefully she won’t have more patients for awhile.

There will be so many other victims than just people when the zombocalypse begins.

True, all disasters all like that.

Great job! Engaging characters, nice visuals, vivid scenes (out on the chaotic streets and the sad, yet noble ending for a loyal friend). Well written, Ralph, cheers!

Thanks.

Very nice. An interesting take on the “loved one” predicament that sometimes gets touched on in zombie stories. Well done!

I didn’t want to write a, “Run/hide from the zombies,” type of story so I wrote about a community who stood its ground or at least an episode within it.

Great scene. I think you nailed the narrative voice in this one. Was shocked to see that it ended so quickly!

Well, I’m not a big fan of zombies, so I didn’t expect to write something too long.

For a minute there, I thought ole doc was going to turn zombie on us! 🙂
Nice job keeping me enthralled in the mystery.

I think she was thinking along the the same lines about him, you know with the closing the door behind him and all.

Love the descriptions of the characters, and the street preacher thing is great. You can pray that the zombies eat the megaphone carriers first, but they never, ever do.

Or they could toss him over the barricade, but then he would be all, “Niiiiiigh!”

Good idea. A kiss would be nice too. 🙂

Aw, the poor puppy. Even in the face of people buying it by the truckload, dogs are the most emotionally wrenching zombie victims (cf. Sam in “I Am Legend”).
