Moonstruck: A Writer’s Challenge

Tweet of the Day: Keep Slow Things Moving Tension and Foreboding

——-

Seeing how lazy I am, I decided to combine my Songwriter’s Challenge-

Songwriter’s Story Challenge:

  • Pick a song you like.
  • Write a story based on, about or inspired by the song/lyrics. A link to the song itself (lyrics or youtube video) would help.
  • Post it on your blog
  • Limit: 1,000 words or less.
  • Include a link back to this post.
  • And leave your blog/post link on the comments so that I may add it to the list.

with this little gem from Sonia’s blog-

Your challenge this month, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story that prominently features a moon (our moon, an alien moon, whatever)…

Genre: It can be science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, etc. It can be a myth about how the moon got into the night sky or a what the moon really is. It can be an apocalyptic tale about the moon’s demise. Whatever you like.

Word count: It should be 500 words or less (go ahead and write some more if you really must :D ).

How to share: You can put it up on your blog and link here or (if you don’t have a blog) you can email it to me and I’ll put it in a post for you.

Time limit: From now until the next challenge is posted.

So here it is . Enjoy!

The music filled the cockpit, as the moon loomed ever larger on the view ports. Just another regular shuttle run from Apex 5 to Luna.

Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On a-Jupiter and Mars

“Attitude roll, .214, check,” I said.

“Check, I’m going to get some coffee, you want some?” said Rob, my copilot.

“Sure, black, two sugars, and could you tell Tess to get back here, she been in the bathroom for a long time,” I said.

“Captain, that’s pregnancy for you. Morning sickness, cravings, long potty breaks. She and her hubby have been trying to have a baby for a long time. And before you anything, she still within the regs to fly regular, at least in the first trimester,” Rob said.

“Is that what your wife told you?”

“Captain of her ship for the five years, over 300 shuttle runs to Luna and counting!”

I smiled, “And you don’t feel less of a man because of it, eh?”

His flashed a wicked pearly white smile under his sky blue pilot cap, “Heck no! She earns more money, which pays for all her shoes, the baby clothes, the nanny and oh, yeah I get to stay at home more with our little girl, Kathy, and she got me this job. So no complaints.”

“Just get me that coffee.”

“Yes, Sir, and tell Trudy that you will see her at the Luna One Hotel later tomorrow night.”

“None of your damned business.”

“No secrets among crew, captain.”

“Just go!”

Fill my heart with song
And let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you

I sang along, enjoying the rare moment of privacy.

The door behind me opened, “It’s about time Trudy,” I said.

“Times up,” said a voice as cold as the barrel pressed against the back of my skull.

Fill my heart with song
Let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, in other words
I love … you
