TV Tropes Monday: Scotireland

Tweet of the Day: Writing Excuses 8.10: Brainstorming With Howard

——-

This trope resides in the corner of “I don’t know,” and “I don’t care.” The specifics of the trope can be boiled down to ignorance by the the person invoking them. Confusing Scotland with Ireland seems pretty stupid to someone familiar with the history of these nations, specially someone living in them. Mind you, being a resident doesn’t give you perfect knowledge of history and some there has been quite a bit of interplay between Ireland and Scotland, enough that some interesting pattern emerge that will be confusing to an outsider (and many a local as well).

Still, the smallest amount of research and a few inquires tend to solve most of the problems with this trope. Mind you, this trope can still be use to show the ignorance of a character or even the audience. So handle with care.

  1. The Scoti came from Ireland and displaced the Picts, so it’s not that big of a stretch.

    • While that is somewhat true (the extend of displacement/integration is hotly debated by scholars), this trope is about how ethnic and or national groups are lumped together. It is like saying everyone south of the Rio Grande is Mexican/Spanish, or everyone east of Germany is Russian. It takes similarities in language and history to absurd levels and shows the ignorance of the user of the trope.
