TV Tropes Monday: Atlantis

Tweet of the Day: Walking the Ghosts

——-

Want an ancient civilization with fantastic technology/magic/treasure that disappeared due to a world shaking catastrophe because of the hubris of Man.

One word: Atlantis.

You’re one stop shop for: ancient mysteries, all myths are true, human aliens, ancient astronauts, eldritch horrors and loopy philosophers looking for allegories to their contemporary world. The beauty of the trope is that it is cultural short hand for ancient majesty lost to time. Stories either are centered around the search of the city or use it as a catch all background to explain advance technology and/or magic in the in-universe.

The problem with this trope is that it is so easy to use it borders on a dead horse trope. Nothing says “generic” (as in “lack of imagination”)  like invoking Atlantis.

  1. What are your thoughts on the Summarians? Do you think they could play a role in fiction similar to that as Atlantians (is this correct?), and thus potentially avoid the trope factor?

    • You mean the Sumerians? I’ve seen some use of them, but since they actually existed, they are not as flexible as the Atlantians. One of the keys to this trope is that it can be whatever you want it to be. Use of historical peoples can always ring hollow.
